Yaz®/Yasmin® Lawyers

Our Cody, Wyoming Law Firm Handles Yaz & Yasmin Lawsuits

Yasmin and YAZ are birth control pills manufactured by Bayer Healthcare.  The generic brand Ocella is marketed and distributed by Barr Laboratories, Inc. Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella contain the same estrogenic compound, ethinyl estradiol, used in the Pill since the early 1970s, but the progestin in Yasmin, YAZ and Ocella is new. This “fourth generation” progestin is called Drospirenone and is unused in any other drug on the market.

Drospirenone linked to life-threatening conditions

Drospirenone has been linked to an increase in potassium levels in the blood, which can lead to a condition known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can cause heart rhythm disturbances, such as extrasystolies, pauses or bradycardia. Hyperkalemia disrupts normal heart rhythms causing the flow of the blood through the heart to slow to a point that permits blood clots to form. Blood clots in the heart can then lead to heart attacks or travel to the lungs where they can cause pulmonary embolus, or travel to the brain, causing stroke. In some cases, and if left untreated, hyperkalemia can be fatal.

Yasmin, YAZ and Ocella have been prescribed to millions of women across America, and they are also marketed to reduce water retention and bloating often associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, too much loss of fluids can lead to dehydration, which also increases the risk of blood clots.

Injuries and Deaths Linked to Yaz & Yasmin

Since 2004, there have been numerous reports of death among users of Yasmin, YAZ and Ocella filed with FDA. These include deaths with reported cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, intracardiac thrombus (blood clots in the heart), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) and stroke in women in their child-bearing years. Some of the deaths occurred in women as young as 17 years old.
